Art Gallery of South Australia
Hi there! Are you looking for a great art gallery to visit? Look no further than the Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide! As an art lover and frequent visitor to galleries around the world, I can confidently say that this gallery is definitely worth your time. It is located just next to Adelaide Zoo so you are in the right part of town to find something for everyone.
One of the things that sets the Art Gallery of South Australia apart is its diverse and impressive collection of art, which spans from the colonial era to modern day. As a fan of modernist art, I was thrilled to find a great collection of work from this period here. In particular, I was blown away by the collection of paintings by well-known artists with South Australian roots, such as Jeffrey Smart and Hans Heysen.
But the art isn’t the only reason to visit the gallery. The building itself is a work of art, perfectly designed for showcasing the collection. And if you’re looking for some unique souvenirs or gifts, the small gift shop has some wonderful items by local artists as well as the usual museum shop fare.
But perhaps what impressed me most was the knowledgeable and friendly staff. During my visit, I was lucky enough to take a free afternoon tour led by a woman with a walking stick, whose name unfortunately I don’t remember. But her passion for the art and willingness to show pieces that interested us made the tour truly memorable.
Of course, like any gallery, there are some exhibits that may not be for everyone. The Archie 100 exhibit, for example, may be more appealing to art nerds like myself, but it is quite academic. And while I enjoyed the Robert Wilson exhibit, some may find it too weird for their tastes.
But with so many exhibitions to choose from, there really is something for everyone. And if you only have a couple of hours to spare, I would highly recommend focusing on the thematic International galleries, which are edgy and meant to challenge, as well as the newly rehung Australian galleries, which are charming and feature some wonderful still lifes.
All in all, my visit to the Art Gallery of South Australia was a true pleasure. From the impressive collection to the knowledgeable staff and charming setting, this gallery is definitely worth your time. So why not make a day of it and soak in some beautiful art?
